How NAAC Certification Strengthens Your Billing Operation

June 9, 2025

At Lowcountry Billing Services, compliance isn’t a department — it’s a commitment woven into everything we do. As the in-house Ambulance Compliance Officer, I’ve seen firsthand how proactive compliance not only protects agencies from risk, but also strengthens every aspect of the revenue cycle. One of the most important tools I rely on to lead that effort is my certification from the National Academy of Ambulance Compliance (NAAC).

I’ve been NAAC-certified for nearly a decade, and I complete continuing education annually to stay ahead of changes in the regulatory landscape. In this blog, I want to share what that certification means, why it matters, and how it benefits the EMS providers we serve every day.

What Is NAAC Certification?

NAAC is the leading educational authority in the EMS billing industry, offering nationally recognized certification for professionals committed to ambulance reimbursement compliance. As a Certified Ambulance Compliance Officer (CACO), I’ve completed comprehensive training in areas like Medicare and Medicaid regulations, HIPAA, OIG guidance, documentation standards, and audit preparedness — all through the specific lens of EMS billing.

But certification isn’t a one-time event. It’s a continuing commitment. Through annual CEUs, I stay current on new developments, payer rules, and best practices. This ongoing education allows me to bring real-time knowledge to our team and to the agencies we serve.

Why This Matters for EMS Providers

When billing is done without proper compliance oversight, agencies face real risk — from billing denials and delayed payments to full audits or even penalties. Unfortunately, many billing vendors offer little more than surface-level support when it comes to compliance. Some outsource it entirely. Others rely on software alone to "catch" errors.

That’s not how we do things at Lowcountry. My role is to ensure that our clients' billing operations are built on solid regulatory footing. That includes making sure documentation supports each claim, that our internal processes are audit-ready, and that our staff is trained to understand not just what to do — but why it matters.

Compliance is not just about protecting the bottom line. It’s about protecting your reputation, your licensure, and your ability to serve your community without disruption.

What Clients Can Expect

My certification supports more than our internal protocols — it also gives our clients direct access to expertise they can rely on. Whether it’s answering a documentation question, preparing for a payer review, or helping clarify CMS guidance, I’m available to assist our partners with real-time, knowledgeable support.

Lowcountry clients can expect:

  • Guidance on improving documentation processes

  • Internal billing oversight and claim review

  • Ongoing compliance monitoring

  • Help navigating payer rules and regulatory changes

This level of support is built into our services — not an add-on or separate consulting fee. We believe EMS agencies deserve full, transparent support from the people managing their revenue cycle.

A Personal Commitment

Compliance isn’t just my title — it’s my responsibility, and one I take seriously. EMS agencies operate in high-pressure environments with limited resources and increasing expectations. The last thing they need is uncertainty in their billing operation.

At Lowcountry Billing Services, I work closely with our leadership and staff to ensure that we’re not only following the rules, but helping our clients thrive within them.
